Factry Historian

The PI System Altrnative

Legacy historians keep data locked away or out of reach. Factry Historian breaks those barriers: open by default , event-aware, and accessible to everyone so your plant can finally use all its data . Built for people, built for the factories of tomorrow.

Reasons to believe

A legacy Historian like PI did the job for decades. But nowadays, it slows you down more than it helps.

Data locked behind seats and per tag pricing

Access is limited, most people in your plant are left out. How’s that supposed to drive better decisions?

Built for yesterday’s IT

PI runs on heavy on-prem servers and closed setups.Scaling means more boxes, not more value — and connecting to cloud or AI is always an afterthought.

Their data, their rules

With PI, your data sits in a black box. Exports are limited, integrations are closed, and you play by the vendor ’s rules, not your own.

Raw values, missing context

PI stores temperatures, pressures, ... but leaves you blind to what’s really happening. Batches, downtimes, and cleanings aren’t detected unless specialists build them manually in Asset Framework or Event Frames.

Before
Legacy Reality (PI-Style)
On-prem sprawl. Multiple Windows servers (archive, AF, Vision) and tightly coupled services. Scaling = more boxes, more babysitting.
Closed data paths. Proprietary stores and gated connectors make egress slow, costly, or fragile. You play by the vendor ’s rules.
Batch over streams. Polling and scheduled jobs first; real-time pipelines to lake/lakehouse are an afterthought.
Context bolted on. AF/Event Frames need specialists; hierarchies are brittle; schema changes hurt; late data is painful to add.
Low observability. Background calcs are opaque; lineage is unclear; auditing what fed a dashboard or model takes detective work.
Licensing friction. Cloud/AI integrations arrive as add-ons, seats, or quotas—innovation throttled by paperwork.
After
How it should be,with Factry
Containerized & portable. Run on-prem, cloud, or hybrid. Scale out horizontally without the ser ver circus
Open by default. MQT T, OPC UA, REST, SQL, Kafka in; Parquet/Delta/Iceberg out to your lakehouse—no heavy ETL.
Event-aware core. Batches, downtime, CIP detected and enriched in real time; late data and schema evolution are first-class.
AI-ready egress. Stream to notebooks, feature stores, or ML pipelines as data lands—no gatekeeping, no re-modeling marathons.
Transparent ops. Metrics, logs, and health checks—no silent drops, no black boxes.
Simple licensing. Per-site, unlimited users—so people, not paper work, set the pace .

FAQs

We have (most of) the answers! Let us know if you still can’t find what you’re looking for.

Can I do a Proof of Concept with Factry Historian?

Yes, we offer a guided onboarding for Factry Historian for a limited period and easy opt-out.

Unlimited tags? Unlimited users? Really?

Yes, really! There are no artificial limits to tags or users in Factry software. Of course, the infrastructure on which the software is running should be able to support the load.

What ERP systems does FactryOS integrate with?

FactryOS integrates with various ERP systems, such as SAP, Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations, Monitor, Navision, QAD, LISA, etc. If you have another ERP system, we implement a new interface with it.

What Integrations do you offer with Factry Historian?

Factry Historian integrates with various systems for analytics & visualizations (Seeq, Grafana, Power BI) and data egress (MQTT forwarding, Parquet files). Have a look at our Integrations page.

What kind of support do you offer?

Factry provides a ticketing helpdesk, phone support during CET business hours, and optional 24/7 premium support. Additionally, there’s detailed documentation, 24/7 monitoring of system and software health, and software updates.

Can Factry software be deployed on-premise and in the cloud?

Both are possible. Factry Historian and FactryOS can run practically anywhere with a Linux OS.

How can I visualize and analyze data from Factry Historian?

We have a built-in integration with Grafana via an official datasource plugin. You can browse asset hierarchies, trend time-series, overlay events, and build dashboards, all natively. Data is also accessible via REST API, MQTT, Parquet exports, or direct database connections, enabling integration with any BI/Analytics tool (e.g. PowerBI, Tableau, Python, Seeq).

What data sources can Factry Historian connect to?

Factry Historian connects to a wide range of industrial sources like PLCs, DCS or SCADA systems through standard protocols such as OPC‑UA, OPC-DA, Modbus TCP, and MQTT (JSON/SparkplugB), and integrates with virtually anything through its open API. Whatever systems you use, Factry makes it easy to collect and centralize your data on your terms. Have a look at our Integrations page.
